Should college students stay at home? (very short version)

Posted on April 14, 2012 by Mr Writefix

Many university students live with their families while others need to live away from home because their universities are in different cities. What are the advantages and disadvantages in both situations?

Is university just a place to get a piece of paper? Or can it be a place to grow personally and academically? This essay will explain why it’s better for most students to move away from home.

Living at home while studying has many advantages. It’s more comfortable than student accommodation. Rent and laundry are free, and there’s no need to cook. Your favorite DVDs are still in your old room, with the Justin Bieber posters and the Hello Kitty collection from when you were nine. The same old friends live nearby, although fewer because some have gone to college now.

Yes, your new college friends across the city are cold and penniless. But they sit in cafes for hours discussing politics and playing guitar and talking to that cute Korean student. The dorms are noisy, but there are always new people to meet. Some of your new college friends have signed up with a Japanese conversation club; others are going abseiling soon. While you snooze on the long uncomfortable bus ride home, they are working together in the library on next week’s assignment. While you sit with your mother watching television watching, they are exploring clubs and giggling during poetry readings.

Clearly, college is about more than a certificate. It’s about learning – not just academically, but about other people and the way you view the world. It doesn’t mean forgetting your old life, but it does mean opening up to new ideas and new experiences. Give it a try! You can always go home at the weekend!

258 words, 19 sentences, 13.5 words per sentence. This essay has exactly the same ideas and structure as a much longer essay (413 words) here.

in the essay case above, ” Many university students live with their families while others need to live away from home because their universities are in different cities. What are the advantages and disadvantages in both situations?,”
do we have to mention the advantages and disadvantages of both cases? or if we mentioned the advantages and disadvantages of one case of them, would be enough? since both case are reverse to each other.
    thanks and regards.

    Hi Ahmed

    You’ve read the question carefully!

The essay clearly favors one side, which is fine, but it should probably be a little more balanced and give more advantages of living at home. However, from the tone, it’s not very serious. I think most examiners would be happy with this layout, even if it is not very balanced.

As you suggest, if you gave all the disadvantages and then its parallel (or opposite/reverse) advantage, the essay would be very mechanical and repetitive.

However, it’s not always true that the advantages are the reverse of the disadvantages. They can be different!

Why don’t you try this essay topic and add it in the forum ? More people will see it there and join in the discussion!

Hope to see you there and thanks for the comment!

      Hi Mzahed!

      “Show our gramamatical capabilities?”

It’s not a North Korean military parade.

Seriously, writing that is easy to read is not necessarily simple to write. Avoid any desire or tendency to make your writing complicated. Just write nice clear simple sentences, and you will do fine. The more complicated the structures candidates attempt, the more often disaster strikes.

      Keep it simple.

Yes, you can use abbreviations like “We’ve” or “I’ve” or “It’s.” No, you can’t use text message language.

What IELTS score would this essay get? What band would this essay get? Let’s do this scientifically

Have a look at the official descriptors for IELTS Task 2 Writing (public version) here, under Lexical Resource for “natural and sophisticated control,” and under Grammatical Range and Accuracy for a “wide range of structures” with full flexibility and “accuracy” and under Coherence and Cohesion for “skillful” paragraphing.

The only question might be the tone or format of the essay, which comes under Task Response. Some teachers or reviewers, born around the time as Lenin or Bismarck, might think the tone is too frivolous, too lighthearted, or even “inappropriate” (see Band 4, under Task Response).

They would prefer something wooden, pedestrian, leaden, turgid: something brain-numbingly boring like the same essay they’ve had in their desk for the last 150 years, typed on a typewriter, and yellow with age, and drag it out to inflict instant brain death on yet another class of students for yet another semester.

Most other examiners would give it a nine across the board, and talk about it to their friends over dinner that night as the only unusual paper they had seen that day in the middle of a sea of half-memorized phrases, unrelieved tedium, and dodgy grammar.

        Dear Writefix,
Thanks so much for your comments.

My main question was that can we write this style in IELTS task2?because I saw the above-mentioned points from other resource, and just wanna to check.

I’m your student and didn’t meant to show grammatical abilities!
IELTS references recommend that we should use wide range of grammar and we can get better score by using them.

    Essay:
Nodaway, there are many university in all around the world and some of them are reliable. What is the best choice student prefer? Who will leave their family to go to fear university? In my essay I will examine some advantages and disadvantage for students who another city fare from family, also, an advantage and disadvantage of studying in near university.
A lot of student like to travel from home to all around the world. Whereas, study is important to the students who are willing and able to continue their study. In addition, the students who are study outside of their country always they don’t interact with other people in the new place. Moreover, the students are more individual in new area and they don’t communicate with their family regular.

The disadvantages if study in the other country is that culture and weekend holiday. However, in my country people are more friendly and share their own culture. In addition, some students don’t come again to their country until 10 years or more as a result students marred in other country fear from their family and build themselves alone.

In fact, compared to my country a lot of national students (male) continue their education in their city. In addition, the advantage of study in near city or country is that we can see our family. Moreover, students have many facility when they are study’s near place and they can do plenty of exercise in own time. Above all, students spend time with colleagues and friends.
On the other hand, there are some specific disadvantages of study in the same city they live. Environment problem such as natural disaster, running, and foggy. In addition, student don’t have transport to go to university.
To sum up, there are many universities from all around the world and some of them are good but other have bad influencing to students such as advantages and disadvantage. I my opinion I agree that study in my country is the best choice because there are an advantage more than disadvantages of study in nearest city.
