Some people think building more roads can reduce the traffic problems. What do you think of this solution?
Traffic problems have been long-standing issues that trouble the authorities. It is highly fashionable in some circles to argue that constructing more roads can resolve those issues. In my opinion, this approach, to some extent, can alleviate these problems. But it cannot be used a complete solution.
Admittedly, building more roads can and dose enhance the traffic condition. More roads mean more alternative options to arrive at the destinations, so drivers do not need to squeeze into certain route when it is already crowded. This will dramatically reduce their time spent on roads.
However, this solution cannot completely solve traffic problems as they are caused by many factors. Firstly, the fundamental reason causing traffic congestion is there are so many automobiles on the road. If the speed of building roads cannot keep pace with the rising numbers of cars, then traffic condition will deteriorate anyway. Secondly, drivers’ responsibility and ability is also of great importance in terms of avoiding traffic accidents which can hold the traffic for a long time. Lastly, bridges, entrances and exits of cities are sometimes the bottleneck of the traffic systems, policy makers should take into account those when planning.
In conclusion, building roads is not a perfect solution for tackling traffic difficulties, more money and effort should be spent on reducing the cars on the roads and improve drivers’ sense of responsibility. In the city where I am living, the government solve traffic problems by encouraging people to take public transportations, such as bus and subways. As a result, although the population is expanding every year, people can still travel in the city smoothly.
