The use of petrol and diesel for transport, especially in private cars, is wasteful and environmentally irresponsible. Taxation on petrol and diesel fuel should be increased to very high levels to discourage the use of private cars. Do you support or reject this idea?

Many international conferences have been recently carried out to find solution for heavily polluted environment relating to high number of car use. Many people think that increasing tax on petrol and diesel fuel is one of the best keys to limit the quantity of private automobiles. Though this can be a effective solution but I think that it also leads to some unwanted consequences and more measures should be taken into consideration in addition to the introduction of tax.

It is undeniable that no sooner is higher taxation implemented than car owners instantly reduce their frequence of driving car due to the economic reason. Facts have shown that most Chinese residents who travel to work by bicycles and underground trains, instead of cars, can save a lot of money per month. However, it is increasing tax on private cars that partially results in the inflation in a country because of mounting costs of transporting goods. Take Vietnam for example, since high taxation was accepted, prices of varied merchandises have been one and a half or even two times higher, putting the economy as well as people’s life here in a difficult stage.

If taxing more on petrol and diesel fuel is not the most sufficient answer, so what other strategies should be taken into account? There are some suggestions that can support the decision of gorvenments. Firstly, policy makers should encourage people to travel by means of public transport. By improving facilities for public vehicles like bus and underground train, from the low fee to the professional service, people are more likely attracted and turn to these kinds of transportation. Secondly, in long term, cars using environmentally friendly energy is one of the crucial and inevitable keys to impede pollutants emitted into the atmosphere. Recently, Ford and Huyndai brands have sucessfully made hybrid cars be reality, which is considered as an innovative and life-changing ideal and leads to a life with less polluted air.

In short, it is necessary for gorvenments to seriously consider their country’s perspective and particular stages before initiating high tax on petrol. Using a combinaton of other alternative actions is also the wise choice.
