Email has had a huge impact on professional and social communication, but this impact has been negative as well as positive. Do the advantages of using email outweigh the advantages?
In this current information technology evolution, electronic mail or email used widely all over the globe. Formal letters, invitations, documents and postcards are sent through email daily. It is true that email has improved our ways of communication in life. However, there are still debatable arguments about the effect of emails to it's users. This essay will discuss both views about the positive and negatives impact of email to our life.
On the one hand, people agree that there a lot of advantages of email usage in our daily life. Fisrtly, we can reduce our costs and save our time by using email. For example, we can send documents to multiple persons by one click through email addresses that we have. Secondly, email can promote and support green technology which can save our earth. There is no paper, no ink and no fuel wasted if we use email instead of conventional postage letters. Thirdly, we can send it anywhere and it is really efficient. Through email, we we not just can sent documents in alphabet form but we can also sen other types of documents such as pictures, presentations and manymore.
On the other hand, there are some disadvantages of email. Since email can't be sent if the internet is not available. hence, not everyone can effort to use email in their life especially people who live in the interior parts or in a poor country.Apart from that, documents in the email easily can be hacked nowadays. With evolution of technology, hackers keep increasing day by day and security to multimedia access was decreases. People can easily separate spam through email and duplicate and modified our documents online instantly. Besides that, informal communication by email can promote abbreviated languages in our life.
In conclusion, email is an important medium in our life today which we cannot deny. It is easier, faster and a more efficient way of communication tool. I definitely agree that the advantages of using email outweigh the disadvantages.
Hi ammat
I have few words on your idea on disadvantages of email. You wrote on your third paragraph.
Since email can't be sent if the internet is not available. hence, not everyone can effort to use email in their life especially people who live in the interior parts or in a poor country.
It is not disadvantage of email itself if people living in remote areas do not have access email. I think question refers to the disadvantages to the people who use email.

Hi Ammat and thanks for this essay
It’s fine! It’s a bit long, at 332, words, so you need to think about 275-300 words in future, but your average sentence length is good at 15 words. You generally have three ideas and supporting examples in each paragraph, and you have topic sentences. It’s not super exciting, but it’s fine.
By tightening up some sentences and making them shorter and more specific, you would have fewer words but still be able to develop ideas fully. For example, in paragraph three, you mention how email is changing our language, but you don’t give any example or support for this one,
Tense
- electronic mail or email used widely all over the globe → electronic mail or email is used widely all over the globe
Word Choice/Word Form/Usage
- the effect of emails to it's users → the effect of emails on its users
Shorten/Specify
- This essay will discuss both views about the positive and negatives impact of email to our life. → This essay will discuss the positive and negative impacts of email on our life.
It's not a very exciting thesis sentence, but it's OK!
Tighten, tidy and tune-up
There aren't really any major problems with your essay. Let's see if we can make some minor changes to your second paragraph.
Here’s your Paragraph Two
On the one hand, people agree that there a lot of advantages of email usage in our daily life. Through email, we we not just can sent documents in alphabet form but we can also sen other types of documents such as pictures, presentations and many more. (120 words)
It’s 120 words long. That's fine: It doesn’t need major change or reorganization, but let’s see if we can tighten it up a little. I might reorganize one idea and make most sentences more specific, and I've added some words and phrases at the beginning and end to relate the paragraph to the question more (see what the question asks about 'professional and social' communication):
On the one hand, email has many advantages at home and at work. Firstly, it reduces costs and saves time. For example, we can send documents to multiple persons with one click. Secondly, email can promote green technology and save resources. No paper, ink or fuel are wasted compared to conventional post. Thirdly, email is versatile and efficient. It is not limited to documents but can include pictures, presentations and audio. We can keep, search and find emails easily and this is invaluable in our private and working lives. (90 words)
I've saved 20 words and just tuned it up a little. Why don’t you try to do the same for Paragraph Three? See if you can reduce the length a little while adding some support the interesting idea in your final sentence.

Hi Ramesh789
Thanks for your comment - yes, there is a problem with the question.
Is the topic a simple question about the advantages and disadvantages of email, or is a more difficult question about the effect on our professional and social communication?
These are two very different questions.
A lot of candidates for IELTS practice by doing advantage/disadvantage essays, and that's useful, but it can have the effect on some IELTS candidates of thinking that all the essays are advantage/disadvantage.
I don't know where this question came from and how accurate it is. It's always a big problem when we are getting the questions second-hand and relying on people's memory.
So if you want to try, here are the two quite different questions again:
Question 1: interesting and new:
- Email has had a huge impact on professional and social communication. Has this impact on communication been negative or positive?
Question 2: Very familiar question - done a thousand times
- Email has had a huge impact our lives, but this impact has been negative as well as positive. Do the advantages of using email outweigh the advantages?
Ramesh, another point...
Since we are talking about emails, Ramesh, and not telegrams, can I make one small point... it's great to have you here commenting, but a few extra words would help the user. There are FIVE articles ('the'/'a') missing from your comment!
I know it's not a formal piece of writing, but since it's an issue in your essays, we can use the opportunity to practice using articles before every noun that needs them!
It's not the old days where we had to pay for every word in a telegram - a few articles and prepositions will make your message flow more smoothly and make it easier for the recipient to understand.
Thanks again for making us think about the question.
In this modern era, computers play an inevitable role in our lives. It is vivid that the written letters are being constantly replaced by electronic mails. Usage of emails has simplified our lives in various ways in the field of communication. I would like to put forth few ideas in favor of using emails besides pointing out few of its drawbacks .
The striking feature which I feel as the big advantage of using email is it being eco friendly. By using emails, lots of papers are saved which in turn prevents many trees from being cut down. Secondly, it is one of the fastest means of communication as the letters can be sent to the recipients in few minutes. In addition to this, it is one of the easy means of communication since the job gets over just by clicking the mouse button. It can also be considered as cost effective, since the same letter can be sent to multiple recipients at the same time at a minimal cost.
We should also accept the fact that the emotional feelings which one gets while reading a letter written by loved ones or while receiving birthday Christmas cards from friends is not achieved while using an email. Due to the advent of the emails, many people working in postal department are at risk of losing their job. Email itself has some security issues. Due to the vast knowledge in computers and technologies, many people misuse it to hack the emails. So its highly questionable to sent main documents via email.
To conclude, though there are opinions for and against usage of emails ,I would consider email as a boon to our modern society. Even though there are certain limitations in using it the positive aspect of it ranks higher.

Hi Madinarafi and thanks for the essay.
It's fine, as an essay - lots of examples, not too many mistakes, and a clear layout. But does it answer the question?
In my answer to Ramesh, I said much of his essay did not answer the question. The problem was with the essay topic having too many questions. Here they are again:
Question 1: an interesting new topic:
- Email has had a huge impact on professional and social communication. Has this impact on communication been negative or positive?
Question 2: Very familiar question - done a thousand times
- Email has had a huge impact our lives, but this impact has been negative as well as positive. Do the advantages of using email outweigh the advantages?
You've answered Question 2.
That's fine, and you've done a fine job, but it's not the same question Ramesh answered. Make sure when you see the question in the exam that you read it very carefully. It's probably not going to be a topic you've written about before. There will be a little twist or something different. Not a trick: the IELTS examiners are not trying to foorl or trick you, but just a different angle.
Word Choice/Word Form/Usage
- Inevitable → unavoidable
- Vivid → clear
- Few → a few
Coherence /Logic/Pronoun Reference
- Due to the vast knowledge in computers and technologies, many people misuse it to hack the emails → Because most people don't know enough about computer security, some hackers can gain access to email accounts or databases.
Generic sentence
You could use this sentence in a million essays:
Even though there are certain limitations in using it the positive aspect of it ranks higher.
So, would you like to try the other topic of the impact on communication? More difficult!
Hi madinarafi5,
I notice something about this sentence...seem like you mention it twice about the cost in the same sentence.
''It can also be considered as cost effective, since the same letter can be sent to multiple recipients at the same time at a minimal cost.''
I think you should discard the red shaded word....:) Good luck.
