In today' E-world,English has become the main language for communication. However, other languages such as French, German and Spanish are also spoken by many people. Thus,I feel that students should be given a choice to select between English and any other foreign language. This essay will discuss the importance of learning English or any other foreign language in all schools.

English is recognized as the international language and many parents prefer enrolling their children in schools which teach English as a foreign language. They believe that as the whole universe has come closer due to the internet, learning English at school level would surely benefit the students in due course. For example, in my country India  people speak many Indian languages. When students require valuable information, they search the internet and try to get the required details only in English.

However, in some countries people are more comfortable with other languages such as French and German. These people would surely recommend the schools to make French or German as the main subject instead of English although it is more popular than those languages.

In addition, Chinese language is slowly becoming popular and it is projected that more and more people will learn the language in future. Under the circumstances, some people might prefer the schools in their country to introduce Chinese language and make it compulsory.

To sum up, I firmly believe that it will not be correct to force students to learn a foreign language in school based only on its popularity. The choice of learning a foreign language should be left to the students.

Hello Radha and thanks for this essay!

The essay overall is fine. I can follow its argument easily, except in Paragraph 3, which needs a little more development or support.

I might rewrite Paragraph 3 as follows to add more examples

However, in some countries people are more familiar with second languages such as French, German, Spanish or Arabic for historical, economic, or religious reasons. Educators in Morocco or Mozambique, for example, have to decide if English is offered as a third language after French or Portuguese, or left to private schools to teach.

hi Radha Muralidhar    a few modifications below:

In today' E-world(time of globalization),English has become the main language for communication. However, other languages such as French, German and Spanish are also spoken by many people. Thus,I feel that students should be given a choice to select between English and any other foreign language. This essay will discuss the importance of learning English or any other foreign language in all schools.( if this idea  is inserted into para2 or being a new para as a comparative discussion the whole structure may be more logical and powerful, :" we should not despise other languages's importance although english is the widest applied language  in the world ")

English is recognized as the international language and many parents prefer enrolling their children in schools which teach English as a foreign language. They believe that as the whole universe has come closer due to the internet, learning English at school level would surely benefit the students in due course(what does it mean?). For example, in my country India  people speak many Indian languages. When students require valuable information, they search the internet and try to get the required details only in English.

a new idea:

english benefits to reduce influence of lingistic barrier when people serach information in a global scope or do business around the world. for example:...

Hi Ma-Frank

Thanks for your comment. I don’t know if Radha is active on the forum at the moment. People tend to sign up before a test and then slip away quietly after a few weeks or months after they take the IELTS test.

It’s probably better to look for recent posts  -  the last week or two. Just check the date to see when the post was published. You can also check when the poster contributed posts or comments by clicking on their profile. If it's a long time ago, they probably have moved on to greater things in life.

You suggest

In today’s time of globalization, English has become the main language for communication.

Your rewrite is better, but I would try to avoid all phrases and sentences with the word ‘global,’ ‘era’ and ‘world’ such as:

  • In todays’ world
  • In today’s global world
  • Today’s world is
  • In today’s e-world
  • In this era of globalization
  • In today’s e-era of gadgets and gizmos

Just say ‘Today’ or ‘Recently,’ depending on the situation.

You can see more examples of tired old phrases and generic sentences here and here. Try to avoid using these phrases!
