(0 votes) Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledgeand skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.
What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Young people are graduating in droves from universities but end up unemployed. Some people urge the universities to impart students knowledge and skills welcomed by employers. However, some assert that universities should focus on education rather than be responsible for vocational training. In this essay I will explain the importance of practical training in universities and then give my own advice.
We go to universities so as to be prepared for certain jobs. Practice should be an integral part of the university learning. Afterall, teaching is the lighting of a fire, not the filling of a pail, according to a philosopher.Teaching students ways of solving problems is more important than forcing them to learn through recitation. Moreover, graduates with skills popular in the workplace are often more productive, and would adapt himself more quickly to novel circumstances than those who do not. Therefore they can often find satisfactory jobs, where they could apply the knowledge they have learned in universities and fulfill their potential.
Undeniably, universities should give priority to teaching knowledge, disregard its practical meaning. Surely sufficient grasp of knowledge is the basis of further development. But the practical use of knowledge, rather than imparting it, should be the purpose of our universities. That is to say, academic study and practical training should go hand in hand in our universities.
In conclusion, giving access to different kinds of knowledge is an important job of the universities. Yet what is more essential is the practical use of knowledge. I think the main function of a university is to provide society with students who know how to apply the knowledge they have learned to the real word.
